the a.j. zone signature contour panel style began after harel worked as a drum designer at a boutique custom drum shop.
the exotic hardwood veneers and bent shell fragments left over from the drum building process presented an opportunity for what he envisioned would be an effective acoustic diffusion panel.
after experimenting with this functional fixture the project quickly turned into a design driven opportunity and an insatiable drive to create wooden landscapes and vast textural pieces.

through symbiotic relationships built with multiple drum shell manufacturers, aaron gathers large quantities of pre-consumer waste generated during the drum building process.
milling the rough shells begins with careful selection and squaring. the full cylinders go through a painstaking six step milling process to produce a myriad of segments typically ranging between 1” and 4” wide. frames are meticulously crafted to maximize strength and warp-resistance to last many lifetimes. segments are then meticulously arranged to balance weight, color, and shape - creating a balanced landscape of woven wood. to finish each panel, every single segment is hand sanded twice to ensure a pristinely smooth satin finish.
